Three Shillings & Sixpence is a story of female empowerment, of triumph over circumstances, of courage and passion and a young girl's dream to read God's word in her own language.

Girl A Bible for All

In 1800, after saving for six years, Mary Jones a fifteen year old Welsh girl walked unaccompanied for twenty six miles over rugged terrain, from LLanfihangl y Pennant to Bala, to buy a Bible in her own language. By doing so she affected the heart of one man, that he made it his life's goal to provide Bibles to anyone who desired one.  The story of her walk inspired Rev Charles to found the British and Foreign Bible Society.

Everyone needed Salt and opportunity knocked everywhere!

The moon was in its first quarter and there was a light offshore breeze as the smugglers reached the headland. There was no moon and a damp mist was drifting in from the sea. The boat landed just after midnight, without a word the gang followed the track down to the bay, running along the shore to unload the cargo.  There was just one last load when the Smugglers saw lights moving along the beach towards them......

Smugglers

The 18th century was known as the golden age of smuggling!

Wales, with its long coastline, remote coves and beaches, was perfect for smuggling and New Quay in the Cardigan Bay was no different. Tea and Tobacco, lace, silk, salt and many other products were brought in and sprinted away through secret tunnels and over coastal paths. Although the  days of the romantic Smugglers ended during the middle of the 19th century the memory of their deeds - and occasional misdeeds - lives on in a thousand local legends and tales and battles and extraordinary escapades.
