Katharina Waitz stared at the 15ft wall topped with barbed wire, took a deep breath and, undaunted began to climb the last leg to freedom.

Ravensbrück was the only site within the concentration camp system that was reserved exclusively for women. Over the six years of its existence, some 130,000 women passed through its gates; 30,000 of them are estimated to have been killed.

Nobody took any notice of two girls heading towards Cottingley Beck one summer afternoon in 1917.

Armed with a camera, a few hatpins and some hand-drawn pictures of dancing fairies, the pair set about staging a prank. Their aim was to play a trick on family members who had teased them for “playing with fairies” at the beck.

What resulted was to change their lives forever.
